What is a back drill?

Back drilling is an advanced processing technology designed specifically for multi-layer PCBs, mainly used to remove excess copper at the bottom of high-speed signal layer via holes, leaving only the necessary parts for connection. This can significantly reduce the parasitic inductance and capacitance of vias, thereby improving signal transmission speed and reducing signal distortion, which is particularly important for high-speed signal lines.

The advantages of back drilling

• Before performing back drilling, it is necessary to accurately position the circuit board. This is usually achieved through pre-drilled positioning holes on the circuit board. Positioning holes are like "coordinate points" on a circuit board, helping back drilling equipment find the correct position.
• After the back drilling is completed, the circuit board needs to be cleaned to remove drilling debris and residues generated during the drilling process. If these residues are not cleaned up in a timely manner, they may affect the performance and reliability of the circuit board.
